Before explaining to you how to activate AirDrop on iPhone , it is my duty to make some clarifications in this regard. First of all, I want to tell you exactly what AirDrop is and what devices are compatible with that technology.
As I mentioned at the beginning of the guide, AirDrop is a tool available on iOS and macOS, through which users who have an Apple device can share content of various kinds, such as photos, videos, websites, locations and much more without them wires, quickly and easily.
This technology uses Bluetooth LE to transmit, discover and initiate connections under Wi-Fi coverage, which contributes to making AirDrop very fast and energy-efficient. For more information, you can refer to my guide on how AirDrop works.
All newer iPhones support AirDrop, while on older devices it may not be possible to take advantage of this feature. To be precise, AirDrop is usable on all iPhone 5 and later models and starting from iOS 7 and later versions.
Clearly, in order to be able to exchange data with another user, it is essential that this, in turn, has a device that supports the use of AirDrop. iPhone aside, the Apple-based iOS devices that support the functionality in question are the following: iPads (4th generation or newer versions), iPad mini, iPad Pro and iPod touch (5th generation or newer versions) ).
As for Macs, AirDrop is available on all Macs in 2012 and later models updated to MacOS Yosemite and later versions.
How to activate AirDrop on iPhone
Having made the aforementioned clarifications, we come to the very core of the matter and let’s find out, in detail, how to enable AirDrop on the iPhone. First of all, you need to worry about enabling both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your “iPhone by”.
To do this, take the iPhone, call up the Control Center by swiping from the top right corner of the screen downwards (on iPhone X and later models) or scrolling from bottom to top (on all other models of iPhone). Afterwards, tap the button with the Bluetooth symbol and the one with the Wi-Fi cleats, so that they turn blue, to enable the respective connections.
In addition to the way I have just indicated, you can activate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth by unlocking the iPhone, accessing the home screen, pressing the Settings icon (the one with the gear symbol), selecting the items one by one Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and turning the respective switches ON.
Once this is done, make sure the hotspot is disabled. To verify this, recall the Control Center as I indicated to you earlier, press and hold the button with the antenna for a long time and, in the box that opens, if the personal Hotspot button is colored green, press it above to disable its functionality. Alternatively, go to the iOS Settings and, if the personal Hotspot item is selectable, tap on it and switch the relative switch to OFF.
Now you are finally ready to enable the use of AirDrop. So, call the iOS Control Center again, press firmly and prolonged on the Bluetooth button and, in the box that opens, press the AirDrop button.
Through the menu that appears on the screen, choose, depending on your needs and preferences, the option Only contacts or All. In the first case, you can only send items via AirDrop to contacts in the iPhone address book, while in the second case to all other users who also use AirDrop.
In addition to the way I have indicated, you can activate the use of AirDrop by going to the iOS Settings, tapping on the General item in the new screen displayed, selecting the word AirDrop and choosing, via the additional screen that appears, the Solo option contacts or All, in such a way as to decide for whom to activate the service.
How to use AirDrop on iPhone
Now that you’ve managed to activate AirDrop on your iPhone, you can use it to easily share content of your interest with other devices as well as, of course, to receive it. Below you will find how to proceed both in one case and in another.
To share content with AirDrop from your iPhone, all you need to do is open the app in which you find the content you want to share, select (if necessary) the item you are interested in, press the icon for the sharing (the one with the square and the arrow that goes upwards) and choose, from the menu that opens, the photo of the user to whom you want to send the data (in correspondence with the item Tap to share with AirDrop).
Once the sharing has started, the other user will receive a sound alert and will be shown a screen with a preview of the shared content, which he can choose to accept or reject by pressing, respectively, the Accept or Reject buttons. If the other user accepts, the shared content is automatically saved and / or opened on the other device, through the app used to manage that particular element or, in the specific case of macOS, in the Download folder.
Clearly, the person to whom you intend to send content using AirDrop must, in turn, have enabled the function in question on your device and must have set the correct reception mode, otherwise it will not be possible to proceed.
To give a practical example, if you want to share a photo with AirDrop with your friend, you need to open the Photos app by tapping on the icon (the one with the multicolored flower) in the home screen, you have to select the image you are interested in, tap on the icon for sharing, select your friend’s profile photo in the section at the top, in the menu that appears, and wait for the latter to receive the relevant notice and accept the receipt of the item.
Keep in mind that if you use AirDrop to send content to one of your devices, for example to share a photo from your iPhone to your Mac, you will not see the option to accept or reject the receipt of the items. In this case, in fact, the content is automatically sent to the device. The only thing you need to make sure is that both devices are connected with the same Apple ID.
Now let’s move on to receiving content: if a person is trying to send you photos, contacts or other things via AirDrop, you will receive a sound notification and will see a warning on the display of your iPhone.
Afterwards, you can choose to accept or refuse to receive the content you are interested in, by clicking on the Accept or Reject buttons, visible on the screen. If you agree to receive the content, the latter will be opened in the app set up for this purpose.
I’ll give you a practical example: if a friend of yours wants to send you a photo from your Mac or from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, he’ll have to open the Photos application (the one with the multicolored flower), select the sharing icon, then the ‘AirDrop option from the menu that opens and / or your photo.
Once this is done, you will receive a special notification on your iPhone. Then, through the warning that will be shown to you on the screen, you can choose, by tapping on the appropriate buttons, whether to accept or refuse to receive the content. By accepting, the image will be opened directly in the Photos app on your.
Also in this case, keep in mind that if you use AirDrop to send content to your device, for example to share a photo from your Mac to the iPhone, and if these are connected to the same Apple ID, you will not see the option to accept or refuse to receive the item: everything will happen automatically.
