App to crop videos on iPhone for free
If your goal is to crop a video on iPhone, all you have to do is choose one of the many apps that are suitable for the purpose and use it. What apps? For example the ones listed below, which are among the best in the category.
Instagram Would you like to know how to crop a video in order to optimize it for Instagram? No problem, also because everything you need is already included in the app of the famous social photo network. Yes, you read that right! Instagram includes practical functions that allow you to optimize videos in just a few taps for its formats: the feed, which includes the use of videos and images in a square shape, and stories, where the contents are proposed in orientation vertical.
If you want to optimize a video for the Instagram feed, obtaining a square-shaped video, all you have to do is start the app of the well-known social network and press the [+] button, located at the bottom center. On the next screen, select the Library tab (bottom left), find the thumbnail of the video you want to post and press on it.
At this point, if the video is not already optimized for the Instagram feed format (so you can see it with sidebands), click on the icon with the two arrows located on its preview, at the bottom left. After that, swipe your finger across the video to move the frame up or down and press the Next button.
Then select a filter from those available (if you think it is appropriate), choose whether to include the audio in the video (by pressing the speaker icon), go ahead and finalize the publication of the content by typing in a caption and inserting the hashtag in description. For more information on how to post videos on Instagram, see my tutorial on the subject.
If, on the other hand, you want to publish a video in the stories, proceed in this other way: start the Instagram app, swipe from left to right (to call up the story creation menu) and press the thumbnail of the last content present in the roll of your iPhone, bottom left.
Then select the video you want to publish and it will be automatically adapted to the vertical format of Instagram stories (so its edges will be automatically cut off). To change the appearance of the movie and, for example, increase / decrease the zoom level or move it, you simply have to act on it with your fingers (to adjust the zoom you can perform the classic two-finger pinch gesture). More information on this is available in my tutorial on how Instagram stories work.
Didn’t the features included in Instagram satisfy you? Do you need to cut out a video without publishing it on the famous social platform? In this case, I would advise you to use Video Crop: a free app that allows you to cut videos on the iPhone in a very simple way, without frills or particular limits (if you exclude some advertising banners displayed during the processing of movies ). Another important thing to note is that it does not apply any watermark to the generated videos and does not present in-app purchases.
To cut a video with Video Crop, download the app in question on your own, start it and press it first on its logo (the cutter) and then on the button to allow it access to the photos (and videos) saved on your smartphone.
At this point, select the video to be cropped, click on the √ button located at the top right and close the ad (if it is proposed to you). This will open the Video Crop editor, through which you can crop your movie by selecting one of the predefined formats listed at the bottom of the screen and / or manually resizing the video box, using the appropriate white indicators on the sides of the player.
When you have set your crop, to save the output video in the roll of iOS, you tap on the arrow icon that you see at the top right, wait a few seconds for the movie to be completed (don’t turn off the iPhone in the meantime) and press the Save button. Alternatively, if you want to share the video in another app, press the button (…) and select the application of your interest from the menu that opens.
Clips is a free application made by Apple, thanks to which you can create short videos to post on social networks. The processed films are automatically cut into a square shape and can be enriched with color filters, music columns, stickers, emojis and other customizations.
The operation of the app is of a disarming simplicity: after downloading and starting Clips, all you have to do is start creating a new project (by pressing, if necessary, on the square icon located at the top left and selecting the appropriate item from the menu that opens), go to the Library tab and select the movie to crop. The first time you do this, you will need to allow Clips to access the photos and videos saved on the iPhone, responding in the affirmative to the warning that will appear on the screen.
Now you have to “record” the part of video you want to keep in the final editing: therefore, move the Clips timeline to the point in the movie you want to include in your montage and keep your finger pressed on the central red button, to start the “recording “(if you have to” record “several seconds of video, you can also move your finger upwards and release the pressure, so as to start the automatic” recording “function).
The operation is completed, press the star icon (bottom right) to apply a filter to your video, to that of the musical note (top right) to insert a background music piece and / or to the cartoon one ( bottom left) to add titles.
Finally, press the share icon (the arrow in the square, bottom right) to save the video in the iOS roll or share the movie in one of the apps on the phone, by selecting one of the icons available in the menu that appears on the screen .
InShot is one of the best non-professional video editors available on iOS. It can be downloaded and used for free, but it imprints its logo on the output videos and has limitations on the number of transitions and effects available. To remove these limitations, you must sign up for a subscription of € 3.99 / month, € 13.49 / year or make a one-off payment of € 38.99 (with the possibility of using a 7-day free trial).
Having said that, to clip a video with InShot, download and start the app on your iPhone, then press the Video button, in order to start the creation of a new project, and you consent to the request for access to the roll of iOS.
At this point, select the video you want to take action on, press the button (√) located at the bottom right and press the Canvas icon (below) to select the format in which you want to cut out your video: there are many to choose from, including some optimized for Instagram.
Next, use the buttons in the bar located below the video to adjust the zoom level of the latter (the dotted square icon allows you to zoom in to the maximum, while the green bar offers a gradual magnification control) and, if if you think so, move the shot using your finger on the preview of the movie.
Finally, when you are satisfied with the result, tap the √ button located at the bottom right, then the arrow icon located at the top right and select the Save item from the menu that opens.
At the end of the video processing (during which you do not have to turn off the iPhone or exit the application), close the advertisement (if it is displayed) and choose whether to share the video on a social platform, by selecting one of the available icons; otherwise close the app and you will find your movie cut in the iOS Photos app.
iMovie doesn’t think it needs too many presentations: it is the Apple video editing app, included “standard” on all iOS devices (and all Macs) and that you can also download for free from the App Store.
It does not offer a real function for cropping videos, however it includes a tool for zooming the scenes that can allow you to cut the outer edges of a movie (without, however, alternating the aspect ratio).
To take advantage of this particular iMovie function, start the app on your iPhone and start creating a new project, by first pressing the [+] button and then the movie button. Give the application permission to access the system roll (if this is the first time you use it), select the video to cut and press on the Create movie item, below.
Now, you tap on the iMovie timeline, then on the magnifying glass icon that appears at the top right and performs the classic gesture to enlarge the images directly on the video preview, in order to zoom it. Finally, click on the End item (top left), then on the sharing icon (the arrow in the square) and choose the Save video option, to save the video in the iOS roll.
